Our History
The Society for Material Advanced Research and Technology (SMART) was established with the objective of creating a vibrant platform for promoting scientific research, technological innovation, and academic excellence. The idea of SMART originated during a journey to Pune, when Dr. Nilesh Ugemuge and Dr. Sandip Parkhi were travelling together to participate in a research workshop.
During the journey, an insightful discussion took place regarding the challenges faced by students, research scholars, and young faculty members in pursuing quality research. It was observed that while many aspiring researchers possess enthusiasm, creativity, and scientific aptitude, they often lack adequate guidance, access to advanced research facilities, awareness of funding opportunities, and exposure to interdisciplinary collaboration.
Recognizing these challenges, both founders envisioned an organization that would bridge the gap between education, research, innovation, and industry. By the conclusion of the workshop, the concept had evolved into a concrete plan to establish a society dedicated to strengthening the research ecosystem and empowering the scientific community.
Thus, SMART was founded as a non-profit academic and scientific organization committed to fostering excellence in materials research, advanced technologies, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration. Since its inception, SMART has been working towards creating opportunities for researchers through capacity-building programmes, collaborative initiatives, scientific events, and knowledge-sharing platforms, with the ultimate goal of contributing to national development through research and technology.
